Jason Freyre started his combat sports careers by promoting professional boxing events in Florida. In 2005, he teamed up with Joe Valdez and (the late) Dieuseul Berto to use their professional sporting event experience and mixed martial arts knowledge to start Real Fighting Championships (RFC) – the first sanctioned professional mixed martial arts promotion in the Tampa Bay area. The inaugural event, Battle of the Bay – took place on February 18, 2005, at the A la Carte Event Pavilion in Tampa, FL. RFC was synonymous with high class, energetic entertainment – you knew you were going to have a knock-out experience at any event! RFC became widely known throughout Florida and nationally, with fighters traveling from all regions of the country to take part. Many fighters launched their professional careers at RFC – Danny Babcock, Crafton Wallace, Edson Berto, Matt Aroyo, Billy Quarantillo, Yosmany Cabezas, Alon Cruz, and David Mundell, just to name a few. RFC promoted 41 events over a 12-year period, with final event in November 2017. Without knowing at the time, the actions of a few gentlemen in 2005 launched the future of MMA in Florida for time to come.
